View moreThe National Telecommunications and Posts Commission (EETT), in collaboration with the company WIK-CONSULT GMBH, completed a study on the sustainability of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Greece. This initiative is part of EETT’s actions to promote the development and competitiveness of regulated markets, while contributing to the goals of the European Green Deal for zero emissions by 2050.
The study focused on the carbon footprint of ICT in the Greek market, with particular emphasis on telecommunications networks, and on policy proposals for its reduction. The key findings highlighted the need to harmonize carbon emission and reporting practices, as differences are observed for the country’s three major providers.
Among the proposed measures are:
• Network sharing to improve efficiency
• Upgrading technologies, with the gradual retirement of old and less efficient networks
• Sustainability incentives, through the provision of spectrum rights, government subsidies and licensing
• Actions to enhance consumers awareness about the environmental footprint of electronic services
Even though EETT is not responsible for environmental issues, it aims to play an active role in promoting sustainable ICT solutions. With this study, it supports the alignment of Greece with the European climate change goals, forming the basis for a sustainable future in electronic communications.
