Antenna systems (transmission and reception) are integral parts of any wireless network. The proper roll-out of a network ensures better coverage and the provision of reliable services to the general public, such as mobile telephony and mobile Internet services. In this way, users can have a “strong signal” wherever they are, which allows them to enjoy uninterrupted communication via their mobile phone and have access to high-speed Internet.
In Greece, the installation and operation of antennas are subject to a strict legal framework which stipulates that a significant number of approvals and licenses shall be granted by competent agencies for every single antenna prior to its operation. This framework aims at ensuring that all antennas meet the requirements for the protection of the public against electromagnetic emissions, the protection of the environment, the safety of air navigation, etc. EETT is the authority responsible for issuing an antenna construction license.
In order for an antenna construction to be put into operation, following a relevant license by EETT, an approval of building constructions and the inspection of the construction by a building inspector are required in accordance with applicable legal framework (available in Greek). In particular, to protect the general public against electromagnetic emissions, it is prohibited to install any antenna for which no study on electromagnetic emissions has been submitted and approved (with the exception of installing stations of restricted power) by the Greek Atomic Energy Commission (EEAE), which is the competent authority for supervising compliance with the limits for the general public’s safe exposure to electromagnetic emissions, carrying out relevant on-site inspections and measurements.
The legislation provides for mandatory compliance with specific limits of electromagnetic emissions for antennas to ensure the safe exposure of the general public to electromagnetic fields. Statutory limits in Greece are lower by 30%-40% than the limits defined in the relevant European Council Recommendation.
Aiming at enhancing transparency in the provision of information about licensed antennas, EETT has developed the Information Portal for Antenna Constructions, keraies.eett.gr. It is a user-friendly web application though which you can search for information about any antenna construction you might be interested in, as well as more general relevant issues.
