Sotirios (Akis) Markatos, Vice Chair

Sotirios (Akis) Markatos has been appointed Vice Chair for Electronic Communications of the Hellenic Telecommunications & Post Commission (EETT) in May 2026.

He was Executive Director of 5G Ventures SA and General Partner of the Phaistos Investment Fund (2021-2024).  He was Executive Director of the Hellenic Public Properties Co-HPPC (2019-2021), General Director at the National Cadastre and Mapping Agency SA (2013-2019), Advisor to the CEO at Forthnet Group (2011-2012), Investment Director at Venture Capital Fund of Attica Ventures (2004-2011), and CEO and Managing Director of Eurocom Expertise SA (1996-2004). 

He served as Head of Research Programmes in the Telecommunications Department of the University of Athens (1990-1996) and Director and Researcher of the Wolfson Unit at University College London (1986-1990), working on technology transfer to industry in the optical fiber communications sector. He also served as Consultant to the European Commission on issues related to the telecommunications markets deregulation and as an Elected Member of the Board of Directors of the European Competitive Telecommunications Association-ECTA (2012-2014). He was a Member of the Innovation Committee of the Hellenic Corporation of Assets and Participations SA (Growthfund, 2020-2022) and Vice-President of the Invention Evaluation Committee of the Hellenic Industrial Property Organisation (OBI). He has authored more than 40 publications on electronic communications issues, as well as on the techno-economic management of related projects and investments.

Sotirios Markatos is a graduate of the Physics Department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and holds an MSc in Modern and Applied Optics from the University of Reading.
