   Numbering

10-digit dialing for both fixed and mobile telephone numbers is required according to the new National Numbering Plan of Greece. The new plan is user-friendly since the numbers contain information regarding the kind and charging of provided services. The increase of capacity assists the introduction of new telecommunications companies and new telecommunications services in the market ensuring competition and consumer benefits.
The application of the new plan will be implemented in four phases aiming at the acquaintance of subscribers. During the first phase subscribers were informed about the new plan. The first phase was completed by July of 2001. Then the second phase started with the parallel operation of the previous and the new scheme. During the third phase, starting from 20 January of 2002, only dialing of numbers according to the new scheme is allowed. In case of dialing according to the old way, a recorded message informs subscribers about the changes. Finally, in the fourth phase, the initial digit (0) of fixed numbers is substituted by 2 (3 November 2002), while the initial digit (0) of mobile numbers is substituted by 6 (19 January 2003).

The new numbering plan is presented in the following tables:

A) Dialing to fixed telephones
For example, suppose that a subscriber wishes to call another subscriber in Athens with fixed telephone number 1234567 or in Rhodes with fixed telephone number 12345. Dialing during the four phases is described in the following table:

The above numbers (series 0800, 0801, 0807, 090, 092 and 096) may or may not be accessed from outside Greek telecommunications networks. In case of overseas calls to the aforementioned numbers, after country code +30 the initial digit '0' is not dialed (for example +30 800 11 XXXXX).
