The intermediary digital services regulated by the Digital Services Act (DSA) are classified into the following categories:
Transmission of information over a communications network or provision of access to such a network, where the information is provided by users of the service. Examples include access to Internet provided by ISPs, Internet Exchange Points (IXPs), domain name registrars, and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).
Transmission, in a communication network, of information provided by users of the service. It includes the automatic and temporary storage of information, for the purpose of more efficient and faster transmission of this to other users upon their request. Examples include Content Delivery Networks (CDNs), and reverse proxies.
Storage of information provided by users of the service, at their request. e.g., web hosting, and cloud computing.
Hosting services that, at the request of the user, store and disseminate information to the public. Examples include social media platforms, online marketplaces, app stores
Platforms or search engines with more than 45 million average monthly active users in the EU. These are designated by the European Commission and are subject to a stricter regulatory regime under the DSA.
