New EETT Regulation for the management and assignment of domain names
March 4, 2015
EETT recently issued a new Regulation for the management and assignment of domain names with
the suffix “.gr”. The new EETT regulations meet the modern needs of companies and individuals who
already have or wish to acquire domain names, increase their options by adding about 8,000 new
names and provide additional protection against malicious practices.
Under the new Regulation of EETT:
- Two-character only domain names can now be obtained, such as aa.gr and aa.com.gr.
- Safety is enhanced, as changes in information that ensure the proper functioning of the domain
name now are held exclusively by the owner and not by the registrar. - Domain names with Greek characters can now use the character [ς] instead of the alphanumeric
character [σ]. - For optimum operation of the registry, registers are now complied to keep the limit of 400
registration statements within a certain time limit.
The new Regulation will come into effect gradually over the next eight months. In particular,
the assignment of domain names with two characters will be effective from May 4, 2015 at 10:00 a.m.
It is reminded that EETT, for domain names ending in .gr, already provides services such as:
- Dispute resolution in domain name cases as for example trademark holders.
- The option of maintaining the same web-address even when a company changes its Internet service
provider company. - Acquisition of domain names with Greek characters such as ” τοονομαμου.gr “.
