EETT terminates a harmful interference in the International Satellite System for Search and Rescue (Cospas-Sarsat) on New Year’s Eve

January 15, 2013

EETT undertook an urgent operation for the location and termination of a harmful interference
in the International Satellite System for Search and Rescue (COSPAS-SARSAT), in the mountainous
region of Fthiotida, on New Year’s Eve. The interference was caused by an unlicensed wireless
system operated by a local municipality and was halted in cooperation with its employees.

This action demonstrates the operational capability of EETT as it was performed by its
vigilant squad that is on a 24/7 operative guard and which successfully responded to the emergency
call from the Greek Mission Control Center (GRMCC) of the Research and Rescue Department of the
Ministry of Merchant Marine.

On the occasion of this incident, EETT stresses that the use of radio frequencies without
proper licensing or authorization and with non-certified equipment is an illegal act and could
jeopardize the operation of services relating to the protection of human life as well as the public
and national security (Civil Aviation, rescue systems, etc.).
