1. How can I register a domain name?

To register a [.gr] or [.ελ] domain name, you have to:

• Choose a registrar from the List of Registrars published by ΕΕΤΤ. Registrars are natural/legal persons through which registration declarations are submitted.
• Submit a domain name registration declaration to the registrar.

The registrar will forward the registration declaration information to EETT’s Registry within one working day. The declaration will be assigned a reference number and will be classified. By assigning a reference number, its time priority is established.

2. How can I find out whether the domain name I am interested in is available?

You are advised to check whether the domain name:

• Is available for assignment through Web Whois, an application for checking the availability of [.gr] or [.ελ] domain names.
• Falls under any of the restrictions determined by EETT.
• Is in line with the rules of synthesis of domain names (available in Greek).

3. Which are the 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd level [.gr] or [.ελ] domain names?

• 1^st or top level domain name: A [.gr] or [.ελ] domain name, e.g.:
  www.eett.gr
• 2^nd level domain name: Any domain name in the form “name.gr” or “name.ελ”. The field “name” constitutes the 2^nd level of the 2^nd level [.gr] or [.ελ] domain name, e.g.:
  www.eett.gr
• 3^rd level domain name: Any domain name in the form “name2.name1.gr” or “name2.name1.ελ”. The fields “name2” and “name1” constitute the 3^rd and 2^nd level, respectively, of the [.gr] or [.ελ] domain name.

4. Will I receive any proof of submission for the registration declaration of a domain name?

Within one working day from notifying EETT’s Registry of the registration declaration information, the registrar is required to provide you with a document proving the submission of the registration declaration, which will state:

• The [.gr] or [.ελ] domain name declared.
• Your full name.
• The reference number and the date, hour and minute of submission of the registration declaration, as sent by the Registry.

5. What is the temporary activation of a domain name?

Following the submission of the registration declaration to the Registry and the assignment of a reference number, the domain name is activated temporarily within 3 hours, that is, your selected domain name is fully functional and may host the website of your choice. The definitive assignment will take place after a period of 5 days. During this time period, you have the right to withdraw your registration declaration.

A key condition for activation is that the registration declaration is not void (available in Greek) and that it is not preceded by another declaration for the same domain name at the time of submission.

Notes:

• Temporary activation does not grant you an exclusive right to the domain name.
• The [.gr] ή [.ελ] domain names whose 2^nd level variable field is the same as a geographical term included in the list of geographical terms and 3^rd level .gov.gr domain names (such as name.gov.gr) are not temporarily activated.

6. How long does the assignment of a domain name last?

The assignment of a domain name remains valid for 2 years from the date when the relevant registration declaration is submitted to the Registry. Furthermore, you may renew the assignment for consecutive periods.

If the  domain name is reserved for a specific body – e.g. a homograph or one with different punctuation marks (available in Greek) – and activated upon its declaration, the 2-year period starts from the date when the registration declaration for the domain name was submitted (or the date when the assignment period was last renewed), based on the date it was reserved, and not the date when it was activated.

7. Should I declare any change in the assignment information of a domain name?

Within 30 days from the date of any modification (e.g. corporate name / name, contact number and address) to the assignment information, you are required to inform your registrar and EETT’s Registry about these changes.
Note that non-compliance with this obligation may lead to the deactivation of the domain name and its deletion upon expiration of a 30-day period.

8. How can I find out if a domain name is already assigned?

You may find out whether the domain name you are interested in is available through Web Whois, an application for checking the availability of [.gr] or [.ελ] domain names.

9. How can I find information about the holder of a domain name?

The information included in the Registry can be disclosed upon a request by the interested party, without prejudice to any personal data of registrants who have requested its non-disclosure (in accordance with Article 21 of the Regulation on management and assignment of domain names).
