The Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT) President was elected President of the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC) for 2013. The elections took place at the BEREC meeting in Bucharest, Romania on December 8th and 9th. The election was unanimously approved by the heads of 27 Regulators of all Member States of the European Union as well as the representatives of the European Commission.

Under the Rules of the Body of BEREC, Dr. Kanellos assumes the vice-presidency of BEREC for 2012 (incoming chair) and 2014 (outgoing chair). Additionally, Dr. Kanellos assumes, for the year 2013, the role of President of the Independent Regulators Group (IRG), formed by the 27 regulatory authorities of the EU members and the regulatory authorities of the four members of the European Free Trade Association (Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) as well as the four countries applying for EU membership (Croatia, Montenegro, FYROM and Turkey).

The BEREC is a European body established by Regulation 1211/25-11-2009 of both the European Parliament and the Council. Its aim is to promote the development of electronic communications market in the European Union, by forging a single regulatory environment in Member States, and also to shape a common European strategy for electronic communications for the benefit of the market and consumers.

The EETT election to the presidency of BEREC is a great honor for Greece and also indicates the pivotal role that the country can have in European level, even in these turbulent times. Moreover, this election, coming not only from the counterpart European regulators but also from the European Commission, acknowledges of the Greek Regulatory Authority’s competences.
