The Hellenic Telecommunications & Post Commission has recently issued a new informative leaflet, the purpose of which is to inform manufacturers, importers, distributors and retail stores on matters concerning Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (RTTE).

Radio Equipment is any equipment that allows users to communicate through wireless devices, such as Walkie Talkies, inter-communication devices (e.g. baby phones), wireless remote controls (e.g. garage door control systems), remote-controlled toys, alarms, pagers, bluetooth applications and wireless microphones.

Telecommunications Terminal Equipment is any equipment that enables communication and that is linked to a telecommunications network, such as public wired telephony networks, PSTN and ISDN, and mobile telephony networks. Examples of Telecommunications Terminal Equipment are fixed, wireless and mobile telephones, answering machines, facsimiles and modems (e.g. ISDN, ADSL).

The aforementioned leaflet informs citizens, among other matters, on the following:

  • The availability and use of Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment within the market, both of which are stipulated on a Pan-European level by Directive 1999/5/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 9 March 1999. Presently, the availability and use of Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment is not restricted in any manner whatsoever in any member state of the European Union, provided the equipment complies with the specific conditions regarding the protection of citizens’ health and the safety thereof and does not cause any interference with any other user.
  • Matters regarding the special marking, which declares compliance with the aforementioned requirements and which must be noted on all devices that are distributed in the market. Specifically:
    • The marking  declares that the device may be distributed and used freely in the European market.
    • The marking  means that restrictions have been imposed on the use of the device, of which (restrictions) the manufacturer is obligated to inform the user. Such restrictions may prohibit the use of a device in certain countries of the European Union or may require the issuance of a relative license.
  • The obligations of all manufacturers, importers, distributors and retail stores regarding the equipment’s distribution in the market.

It should be noted that the Hellenic Telecommunications & Post Commission conducts the necessary controls in the Greek market in order to make sure that all equipment adheres to the aforementioned conditions.

It should be noted that the marking, apart from Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment, must also be noted on other categories of equipment (e.g. home appliances), which, however, do not come under the competency of the Hellenic Telecommunications & Post Commission.

The Hellenic Telecommunications & Post Commission will distribute the aforementioned leaflet to manufacturers, importers, distributors and retail stores and will hold one-day meetings with regard to the aforementioned matters.

This leaflet is available on the web-site of the Hellenic Telecommunications & Post Commission (www.eett.gr, Publications/Informative Leaflets).
