Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT) participates in the European Project “7SHIELD” (Safety and Security Standards of Space Systems, ground Segments and Satellite data assets, via prevention, detection, response and mitigation of physical and cyber threats), funded by the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, “Horizon 2020”.

Through its participation in projects under “Horizon 2020”, EETT seeks to develop skills and strengthen its know-how in matters of its competence and specifically in relation to the regulatory challenges posed by new technologies, based on specific applications and usage scenarios. In this context, EETT can make timely use of the knowledge and experience gained from its participation in European high-tech projects, to shape the appropriate regulatory environment in Greece, within its responsibilities, facing the challenges of the modern digital age, adequately, supporting innovation and enhancing socio-economic prosperity for the benefit of the Greek citizens and businesses.

“7SHIELD” started on September 1, 2020, and will last 24 months. The project consortium consists of 22 partners from 12 countries, including Greece, which is represented by a total of 6 partners. The aim of the project is to enhance the protection and resilience of terrestrial satellite data reception systems against cyber-attacks, as well as natural attacks or disasters. More precisely, a technology platform integrating a series of sub-technologies (i.e. attack prevention technologies, cyber threat detection technologies and natural intruders, as well as methods and technologies of immediate intervention in case of attack), will be initially designed and developed. At a second stage, the platform will be tested in 5 satellite systems’ earth stations, owned by:

  • the National Observatory of Athens in Penteli,
  • the Arctic Space Center of the Finnish Meteorological Institute,
  • the Ground Segment of DEIMOS in Spain,
  • the ICE Cubes Service of the Belgian Space Applications,
  • the ONDA DIAS platform of Serco Italia.

In the frame of “7SHIELD”, EETT’s role concerns the sharing of best practices and knowledge gained by EETT’s Spectrum Directorate for:

  • the design of system/subsystem solutions applied in special use case scenarios,
  • the response and mitigation actions of physical and cyber threats,
  • the evaluation of the existing regulatory framework against specific ICT solutions for the development of standardization strategies and policy planning,
  • the dissemination and impact creation activities.
