Commissioner of Telecommunications and Postal Regulations
Dr Polys Michaelides was born in Limassol, Cyprus, in 13th April 1947.
Since January 2009 he is the Commissioner of Electronic Communications and Postal Regulation of the Republic of Cyprus.
He graduated from the University of Innsbruck (Tirol) in Austria with M.Sc. (1971) and Ph.D. (1973) in Geology. He continued (1974 – 1975) Postdoc. Studies in Geomechanics at the University of Munich, Germany. He is also a holder of diploma in Business Administration from the Productivity Centre in Nicosia (1987 – 1988) and in Effective Management from the Henley Institute (Oxfordshire) in United Kingdom.
He worked as a geologist with the Canadian Mining Company «COMINCO» (1973 – 1974), both in Cyprus and Greece, and as Engineering Geologist with the Geotechnical Consulting Office «GEOMECHANIKI LTD» (1975 – 1976), in Athens. From 1976 to 2009 he joined the Geological Survey Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment of the Republic of Cyprus, from which he retired at 07/01/2009 as a Director General.
He is founding member of the Cyprus Scientific Technical Chamber (ETEK), member of various scientific associations and, also, member of the European Regulators Group (ERG), of the Independent Regulators Group (IRG) and of the Body of European Regulators of Electronic Communications (BEREC).
He is a writer of a great number of scientific publications, both at home and abroad.
He speaks fluently English and German.
