Dr. Nikolaos Papaoulakis

eett 113a

Dr. Papaoulakis was born in Athens in November 1977. He is alumnus of Experimental School of University of Athens (ΠΣΠΑ). He received the Diploma of Electrical and Computer Engineer from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in 2002. From 2007 holds his PhD at NTUA with title “Radio resource management and optimization techniques for radio mobile networks of 2nd, 3rd generation and WLAN”,

From 2001 he is Senior Researcher Associate on the Institute of Communications and Computer Systems (ICCS) at the Electric and Computer Engineering School of the NTUA. He has participated in big number of European Union and Hellenic state funded research projects as Researcher and Technical Manager. Moreover, he has supervised a big number of diploma thesis with topics relative to the mobile and wireless networks.

His research interests are within the area of wireless and mobile networks like GSM 900, DCS 1800, WCDMA 2100, WLAN, DVB-T/H, WiMax and LTE with focus on the radio resource management and optimal usage of the radio spectrum as well as the efficient heterogeneous internetworking of mobile technologies for the increase of the network’s capacity and provision of guarantee QoS to the end user.  Dr. Papaoulakis has designed and implemented an innovative test bed for trials on GSM 900 – DCS 1800 network and he has developed a traffic generator (CSD-GPRS) for the above mentioned networks as well as WCDMA2100, based on usage of multiple mobile terminal devices and RF attenuators that are controlled from a PC, for the evaluation of the radio resource management. Moreover, Dr. Papaoulakis has participated in the task force of NATO, for the creation of a technical report for “Awareness of Emerging Wireless Technologies: Ad-hoc and Personal Area Networks Standards and Emerging Technologies.

He has published more than 33 works on scientific and recognized International conferences and magazines.  He has also received the best award paper honor at the 15th IST Mobile and Wireless Summit 2006 with title «Congestion Avoidance Control Mechanism for Mobile Cellular Networks». He has taken part on the work group of the IEEE 802.11k for the radio resource managements on IEEE 802.11 networks.

Since 2006 he has received the radio amateur licensee with callsign SV1IZY

From the September of 2009, he is member of the Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT).
